What is an

Athletic Therapist?

A Certified Athletic Therapist is a health care practitioner who is proficient in human anatomy, biomechanics, strength, conditioning and the overall health and rehabilitation of the musculoskeletal system (MSK). Traditionally, Athletic Therapists work along side professional athletes and their teams to ensure recovery, performance, game prep, emergency first response, acute injury management and injury rehabilitation. Athletic Therapists can be found on the sidelines, at workplaces, in medical supply and most often, in clinics. A treatment with an Athletic Therapist may look similar in some aspects to treatment from other healthcare professionals but it is the vast foundational knowledge Athletic Therapists have about the MSK system, how to utilize its full potential through strength and conditioning programs and how to relate this to your goals and functions of everyday life at sets us apart, clinically. Athletic Therapy is for everybody - every job, every sport, every body. What make us unique is our on-field first responder capabilities, practical application of recovery, acute care management and, most importantly, our ability to work as part of a team.

What is an Athletic Therapist's scope of practice?

Certified Athletic Therapists adhere to the Sports Medicine model of care, incorporating in-depth knowledge, education and training in the areas of the human musculoskeletal system, exercise physiology, biomechanics, and emergency care.

Within this, the scope of practice is divided into five practice domains, as follows:

  1. Prevention

  2. Assessment

  3. Intervention

  4. Practice Management

  5. Professional Responsibility

What to expect my first visit?

Once you book your appointment, you will receive a phone call from us to confirm the appointment and answer any questions you may have. You will be sent an online assessment and consent form that you must fill out prior to the appointment (just so we can have more time in the appt for other important things!) Please bring shorts and/or a t-shirt to the appointment, and depending on the assessment, shoes that you wear everyday or train in.

Once you arrive, and complete the on site COVID screen, you’ll get changed if you need to and we will start the assessment. The assessment includes in depth orthopedic screens, tests, observations and palpations. Once the assessment is over, we will talk about the findings and discuss the design of your rehab program, frequency of treatments and thorough education of your injury/your mechanics.

In your appointment, you should always feel safe, respected, heard, educated and confident in your practioner. We want our patients to feel empowered by this experience and to feel they have a team who will guide you and facilitate you to your goals.

**note, depending on the situation, you may feel sore after the assessment as we do need to test some tissue limits. But don’t worry we will make sure to make it as comfortable as we can and to make sure you have the tools to calm down aggravated tissue. **

Do you have to be an athlete to be seen by an athletic therapist?

Absolutely not! Everyone deserves the elite level of care an athlete gets. Athletic Therapy is beneficial to everyone from kids, seniors, post surgical patients, anyone with a concussion, active or retired military members, industrial athletes, desk jockeys and youth and adult athletes. Every one works hard, moves their bodies and feels pain or discomfort at some point, and everyone deserves the best care possible.

Are your services covered under insurance?

Yes! Contrary to popular belief, Athletic Therapy is recognized by most insurance companies. Your coverage amount is determined by your extended health benefits and you may or may not require a referral, so check with your benefit provider. We do not direct bill, therefore payment is due when service has been provided. We will issue you a receipt with our certification number to submit to your insurance for reimbursement.
